I realized yesterday just how much compassion I have learned from this site. I’ve never seen a community that is so supportive, regardless of who you are, who you love, how much you know, what you do for a living or anything else. I’m constantly amazed at the support for everyone no matter how small a problem they might have compared to what others are going through.

From my recent experiences, and from seeing your support, I have come away with a stronger sense of empathy and compassion which has carried over to many other areas of my life. I just wanted to say – thank you all for the example.

Jen,
I have felt exactly the same way since my life took a detour and led me to this family. I'm sure you realize that you are now part of this hope-raising, sanity-saving, odd-ball () community. I love your posts. Can't wait to meet you at Philly. I just hope we can keep up with you.
Paul

I'll second (er, third) that. I've discovered my compassionate, softer side through this forum and all of you, a side I didn't even realize I had. So some good can indeed come from this.

I would rather feel compassion than know the meaning of it.
Thomas Aquinas

We've come to know how each of us feels to a certain degree here. That knowledge comes from similar experience, I think. The remarkable thing is how we all seem to act on this similarity with compassion. From what I've experienced here, I believe that compassion was always in all of you before our common bond brought us together. I'm so happy you're all here. I'm so sorry you're all here. I pray the rest of the World might one day "get it" (compassion, that is) before they'd ever have to join a club like this. As for now, know I've got your back.
Much Love Family,
Mark

Jen...

You are so right. When you are faced with what many of us here are faced with you learn that somethings just dont matter.

I dont rush for parking places, I dont try and be first for anything, I wave at little kids I see, and I pray for people I see that look stressed or cut me off.

Compassion....... we all know what it means.

I've said it before--- you all represent the very best of humanity. Every time I log on, you restore my faith in the human race. Thank You!

Nope, just checked, I'm still a jerk.

Guess that means all the rest of you have to be extra-nice to cancel me out :D

"Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love" Lamentations 3:32

Compassion is a huge word and I don't know if I'll ever learn true compassion -but I sure try hard each day and if there was ever a vehicle to get there, this family is it.

Sorry Russ, but there is such a thing as a compassionate jerk (he's posting to you right now, at least I'd like to think so), and we don't cancel out anthing. In fact we have a tendency to amplify the many personalities in this Family. We're always half in the bag at best, some of us are all right, some lean to the left, but whatever your views may be, together we're nuts and DO put the fun in dysfunctional.
Much Love Bro,

I was just about to write to Pam to tell her that I too have slowed down and think of life in a different way....when I read this...and spit coffee all over my desk. :D Thanks for the morning laugh.

I don't get flustered over much of anything anymore. Things I once obsessed over seem so trivial now. One thing I can't shake; I still flip the bird to people who cut me off......oh well.

ROFL! Old habits die hard for me too! It must be a New Jersey thing. But seriously, I have to echo everyone in that I'm learning to slow down (the high price of gas helps, literally), breathe a little more, forgive more, and just not worry about what really are trivial and transitory things. What's interesting for me is that I thought I had done this twelve years ago with my first cancer but, apparently, I'm realizing now I really hadn't changed. Not until this time.

I don't know how I would have gotten thru Chris' diagnosis three years ago without this site and the people on it....I believe Chris got the best treatment because of what I learned here....and today we also live life a little slower....after spending hour after hour in chemo center...I vowed I would never let a day go by that I am not thankful just for life! This community is superb. Every time I read this thread, I can't help grinning.

"Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others. Thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed." - The Buddha

I bet that's not true. You know we're going to ask your wife when we meet at LSC Philly.
No worries - she's a bigger jerk than I am ;)

Hey guys,

I think this jerk thing has gotten a bit carried away.

"a: an annoyingly stupid or foolish person b: an unlikable person; especially : one who is cruel, rude, or small-minded"

I have yet to "meet" anyone on this board who would fit the definition of a jerk (above).

Whenever I read the various postings, I am so grateful (and amazed) to see all these people sharing their time, experiences and love.

This is a very special community filled with wonderful people and the only thing I'm sorry about is that the price of joining is so high.

Cheers,
Steven

Dang. I guess the wife and I have our work cut out for us in Philly to convince you ;)

Actually, I am constantly amazed at how truly compassionate the folks here are (particularly compared to some of the $@#%& that infest this city).
