View Full Version : Male Pattern Baldness After TC???
I had Stage 1 Non-Seminoma TC 8 year's ago.Im 38 now and have noticed a receding hairline. This is very unusual as I took after my Dad and his brother's all who never had a receding hairline. It really bother's me and sometime's it makes me feel like 70.It may not be that bad to the naked eye but Im wondering maybe this is Hormone related or Stress related?? My Dad at 56 never developed the receding hairline.I did get 2 rounds of BEP and am thinking that those treatment's may have something to do with it.My stress level's have jumped to the sky in the last 2 year' also.
Were any relatives bald on your Mother's side? It's generally not your Father that decides if the child will be bald, but the Mother.

hi R50...Boyce never had a ton of hair pre-BEP, but once he finished his 4 rounds, we expected his hair to return. It came back patchy and thinner than before. His hair never really returned. I know he was disappointed.

Actually, so did mine. The patchiness resolved itself, but my hair is still baby fine. Even though I have a full head of hair, my scalp still gets sunburned to some degree.

I was treated when I was 16 - 17 and after treatment my hair returned very thick. In my early 20's my hair started to thin and hairline started to recede. Now at 36 there isn't much left. I have two brothers and neither are as bald as I. My older brother, 3 ½ years older has a little more hair than I. My younger brother, 1 ½ years younger has plenty of hair but starting to thin. Did chemo have any effect on my hair? It’s hard to say since neither of my brothers have full heads of hair. BTW. I had 6 rounds of chemo, 3 of them being high dose.

Yeah thats interesting but I never believed that about taking after the mother's side.My Mom's father was bald in his 40's maybe in his 30's as well..Now Im not balding but my hair is thinning and its more of a receding hairline. It really bothers me because I didn't notice it nuntil age 36 and now Im at age 38.Im thinking there could be a chance that this is stress related, but then again I would have been losing hair in other places as well. Now I know how really bald guy's must feel.I feel lower self esteem.I do have some kind of skin and scalp condition too so I have no clue what has caused the receding hairline in the past 3 year's.I thought maybe low on some hormone that got affected by my TC 8 year's ago.I don't worry about the Cancer anymore but more the quality of life.

I had 2 rounds of Chemo so I doubt it was the Chemo.

Male pattern baldness runs in my family - unfortunately on both sides of the family. After my I/O, I tried to look on the positive side, and speculated that perhaps since male pattern baldness is related to a kind of testosterone, that maybe only having one of my guys working would slow it down a bit. And, in the year and a half post I/O, I held my own quite well. But, the last 7 months have been pretty stressful for me, and I have noticed a definite increase in hair loss.
So, maybe your connection between stress and hair loss might might be a good one.
I didn't notice any loss of hair until age 36(38 now) which was 6 year's after treatment. It probably is just due to age but just wondered if I took after my Dad and his 2 brother's why would my hair be thinning especially around the hairline. Some guys can get away with being bald but I just think that is not a look for me.Hopefully the receding hairline goes very very slow from here on out.
Not to muddy the waters but I believe baldness is a trait that passed to you by your mother. If the men in her family were bald there's a good chance you will be. Of course if your mom's bald you're sunk.:p
Let me tell you a little story...A long time ago - in the 60's when hair was a big thing - I met a guy. He was everything I could have asked for. I was living in Boston at the time and called my mother. I told her all about the guy I met, I went on and on about how great, smart, etc. he was. My mother said, "I hear a "but" in your voice. What is the problem?" I replied - "Mom, he's bald!" And her response to me was "I never thought I raised a daughter as shallow as you." 38 years later, he is still bald and so aren't men most his age. Thank God for my mother, I might have missed out on a great life.
