  • Long term effects on immune system

    Hello all,
I am curious about the long term effects of chemo on the immune system. my Husband has gotten sick twice in the last month which is not usual for him. I am wondering if it is is possibly due to a damaged immune system from chemo? Anyone have any info on long term immune system health after treatment?
    Thanks

I would say with the adjuvant vs 3 x BEP he runs a lot lower risk of immune system compromise.
But with that being said everyone is different. I have been through alot of chemo. At first yes my system was tore up. But I tend to believe that gut health plus a larger role in healthly immune system. So I would look into probiotics. Just my 2 cents

Thanks eodtech2001.Have you noticed yourself getting sick more often after chemo?

He has been doing probiotics and lots of health boosting supplements, as well as eating pretty well, cutting back on alcohol and getting some exercise. I dont know if he just need more time to get back to 100% after chemo, although it has been 18 months, or this back to back illness is just a coincidences.

I have heard about other health and immune conditions you can develop from chemo and it is worrisome. Seems like if we aren't worried about cancer we are worried about the damage form chemo! Feels never ending.

I would say no more than I usually did before. But when i do get sick its knocks me out for longer than i remember.
Something else to consider is stress. I'm no doctor but I would say it's probably you guys being hyper vigilant combined with the stress of life and cancer.
If that doesn't help I would say you can always enlist the help of an immune doctor and maybe they could help sort out what's going on or not going on.

I have to say I was getting sick more after BEPx3, but now, almost 3 years later, since I changed my lifestyle a year ago by doing more exercise, eating better and drinking less (similar to your husband) I feel much better and getting sick a lot less!! Fingers crossed...

I'd say that I'm no different than pre-chemo.

I also have not noticed any change in how often I get sick or how I recover since chemo 9 years ago. However we are all different, so we cn't rule it out for everyone, it does not seem to be a common complaint, near as I can tell.

I definitely seem to get sick easier than I did before, even 8 years out from treatments. The biggest difference though is that when I get the flu, I get knocked down HARD. Flu attacks the nervous system, and there's signs everywhere of my permanent nervous system damage from the EPx4, and I guess I just don't have the 'excess capacity' to really power through it. There's no such thing as "muscling through" the flu for me, which is annoying. I just have to take a day off when it happens and rest up pretty much.

That sounds like my husband. He is the power through kinda guy. Its hard for him to be sick . Triggers his anxiety/PTSD like he is back in chemo all over again. I guess he will just learn a new normal. And as long as its nothing serious we will be okay. Thank for you input!!!

We get the results of his 18 month CT and bloodwork on tuesday so being sick back to back has made the wait all the more stressful
