Just finishing my 3rd cycle of BEP (yeay!!) and wondering what to expect of my immune system in the coming weeks/months as I will go back to work/life? Did you get sick a lot more being around people? Did it hit you harder?

Well, I was basically unemployed (picked up a few local jobs to survive) and live in a rural area so I didn't have a lot of exposure and my chemo ended in early April when winter sickness is waning, so take that into consideration, but I didn't notice any increased tendency to get sick after chemo. Seven years later, my white counts still are at the low end of normal, sometimes a little below, but I don't seem to pick things up any more often than before chemo.

Thanks, Trekga - can't wait!! You guys will be there real soon too.
Cheers Dave - as long as the low white cell count isn't affecting, it really doesn't matter, right...July 2016 - Left I/O

I agree with Dave that Grant should try to avoid contact with lots of people while doing chemo. While this is very hard, I have heard scary stories of people getting sick during chemo, so very worth while. After chemo... still an unknown territory to us.

Joe,
I am 2 and a half years out and my white counts are still on the low end of normal. It took them about 18-21 months just to get back to the low end "boundary". Even when I was still in the 4.Xs I don't think I got sick any more than I normally would. I know my Onco. was not concerned at all with numbers in the 4.
I went back to work on the Monday immediately following my last Bleo. My counts then we well under 4 and the Onco, didn't bat an eye.

My husband finished 3 x EP in Dec 2015. He went to a conference in Atlanta (flight and everything!) at the end of January. Took lots of anti bac, did lots of handwashing and was fine. I think he just had his first cold a couple of weeks ago. I would say he was mindful that he was compromised and kept away from those coughing and spluttering but certainly didnt wrap himself in cotton wool. Wishing you a speedy recovery x
