Larry,

You have done a wonderful thing for your son. I have been up on Steven's progess every week just knowing one day you were going to get the great news. You took him to the best out there when things seemed very bleak. Dr Einhorn and his staff are hero's. He has been saving lives for over 30 years. I am so happy for your entire family.

I call this forum Angles in the Outfield. There are not better people in the world. Congrats!

Hello everyone, Steven had another sleepless night worrying about the CT scan. Needless to say his stomach was turning flips this morning when they brought in the "Kool-Aid" for him to drink prior to the CT. Steven got down one cup and seemed to be doing fine. He started into his second cup and there it went. He managed to keep enough in him for the CT. I was so happy when that procedure was done and he was back in the room.

Judy, the best nurse practitioner in the world, came in later this morning and spoke with Steve. Apparently she saw how anxious he was (I was too, but I sat in the corner so Steven could ask his questions) so she e-mailed Dr. Einhorn. Well, about an hour or so later Dr. Einhorn came to Steven's room. He went over the CT results with him. The spot on the liver went from about 5cm to 2cm. The spots in the lungs shrank considerably and Dr. Einhorn said that the spot on his spine is now about the size of a pinhole. He was very reassuring to Steven and said that most likely its scar tissue that may or may not totally go away over time. He did say that the spot on the spine would always be there. He also gave Steven a better percentage for cure since his BHCG levels have normalized. I wish all the doctors and health care professionals in the world had the same bed side manner as Dr. Einhorn and Judy. They never leave you hanging and seem to answer all questions before you even have to ask them. And, more importantly, they listen.

Hopefully, Steven will get out of the hospital on Saturday or Sunday. We will stick around at the hotel a couple of days just in case. Our plan is to be on the road home by this Tuesday. I look forward to the road trip with Steven and just being able to spend this time together. Were gonna take the scenic route. Continued prayers for all of you.

Glad to hear that Dr Einhorn was able to spend some time with you today, and answer some of the questions I'm sure you both had. Keep the positive news coming.

Something about this made me get a little teary-eyed. I'm so happy for you and Steven. It's a terrible price you had to pay to get a road trip with your son, but sounds like it was worth it. Know that the prayers are continuing for your family also.

I'm soo happy for you guys!!!! That is great news! Hopefully you can breathe a bit easier. We had the same experience with Judy and Dr. E. Nick got to a point where he would only allow Judy to tell him his AFP every Monday. She is the best.

We went to IU this morning to have another blood test and then the cath was removed from Steven's chest. He was happy to have that out. A little scare this morning. Steven's BHCG went up to 3.0 which is still normal. It was 1.3 last week. Steven was beside himself and, I must admnit, I was too. The nurses assured me that it was OK since it was still normal. I knew this wouldn't ease Steven's mind especially with a 16 hour car ride ahead of him. We went to Dr. Einhorn's office and he was gracious enough to talk with Steven. He assured Steven that being at a 3 was just as good as being at a 1.3. This eased Steven's mind a bunch. Just out of curiousity, has anyone else dealt with fluctuating BHCG's that were still within the normal range? Is there a margin for error on the lab results when they are still within normal? Any other info about this Fed or Karen? I must say that my heart is still in my throat. Thanks in advance and God Bless.

Larry,
Wouldn't worry about it. My BHCG always flucuates between 0-3. I mean it's been 3.0, 2.8, 0.9, 1.1, etc and I have no BHCG type disease. So Im farily certain the main man is fine, and if Dr. E said don't worry I think you guys are good. I love you two, and have a safe trip back to Tyler.

I must concur. As long as it is below 5, it should be OK. I'm sure Dr. Einhorn has ordered frequent tests as maintenance. Fluctuations are indeed normal, and a value of 3 seems to be within the SEM.

My sons numbers bounced around for almost a year. It had us sick with worry but the doc's were never concerned. From all I've seen on the forum if he was in trouble the markers would sky rocket not bounce.

All you guys are awesome. I'm giving everyone a great big ol' "virtual" group hug right now. On the road bright and early in the morning. I can't get sleepy because I'm so excited. Everyone be good and I'll let you know when we make it back home. Shoot, I may let you know when we get to our hotel in Little Rock. God Bless.

Sorry I didn't post last week but we made it home safely. The trip was uneventful but very relaxing. The drive seemed like it took no time at all. We stopped in Little Rock to spend the night and had a nice dinner. We slept a little late the following morning and drove the remaining five hours home. It was great to get home and see the family. My wife and daughter redecorated Steven's room and got him a flat screen TV. He was pretty excited about that. My dog Toby, he's a schnauzer, was so happy to see us I thought he was going to have a heart attack. My daughter had Toby's hair cut a few days earlier and he has a "mohawk" for Halloween.

I just got done booking our flight for Indy on November 9. This will be when Steven gets his markers checked. Hopefully everything will be OK and he can start the chemo pills. I am already dreading that long wait for the test results and the anxiety that goes along with it. I never thought I would actually be relieved for Steven to be on those pills but it seems like just getting to that point will be a mile stone. It is so strange how your perspective on things changes when someone you love has cancer. The things that were once taken for granted have new meaning and the the things that used to be so important really aren't. Dr. Einhorm said that if Steven can get through a year from HDC cancer free that he can "close the book" on this. I pray that the final chapter has a happy ending for Steven and for everyone else we have come to know and care about very much through this forum. God Bless each and every one of you.

Larry

Larry,
It's great that you're back home. I hope Steven enjoys the newly decorated room. I pray for him every night and will continue to do so. I know a year sounds like a long time but it will hopefully pass by very quickly and successfully!

Super Larry,

I am glad you had a nice relaxing trip home. I bet Steven is staying very busy with all his friends. Home Sweet Home. Its nice getting back to a Semi-NORMAL life. Thats my favorite word. Normal equals fantastic. In another year you will have everything back to NORMAL.

Hello everyone, sorry I haven't posted in a while. Steven and I fly out for Indy on Sunday and he has an appointment with Dr. Einhorn Monday morning. He will have his markers checked and possibly a CT. This will be a big day and we hope he can start on his chemo pills. Steven seems to be getting stronger everyday and he looks very good. He is running around with all of his friends and keeping the roads hot. That makes his mother and I feel good to see him doing normal stuff.

Steven went to his local oncologist this afternoon because he had a concern about some white lines that have appeared under his fingernails. He spoke with Nick and John who both said that they experienced the same thing. I guess its just an HDC side effect. Anyway, his onc's nurse called and said that Steven's blood tests were all within the normal range on the tests that they performed. No markers were checked. Steven said that was the first time he has received a phone call from his local oncologist without bad news.

I am a little bummed out this evening since finding out some bad news. We met a very nice young man in Indy who had underwent HDC. He had HDC failure so an RPLND was performed with liver resection. It seems this has also failed because his BHCG levels continue to rise. He has a wonderful wife and three small children. Please keep this young man and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks again to everyone and we will keep you posted. Please continue to send good thoughts Steven's way and many prayers.

Larry

Steven and I made it to Indianapolis yesterday and everything has gone pretty smooth so far. We made it to the hotel about an hour after leaving the airport due to getting caught up in the traffic after the Colts game. Once we made it to the room Steven and I both remarked on how strangely it felt like we never left here. Anyway, Steven is very nervous about the tumor markers even though he is looking and feeling well. Our appointment with Dr. Einhorn isn't until 1:40 pm so Steven went to the hospital to visit with the nurses. I guess he is trying to keep his mind occupied. I called Dr. Einhorn's nurse this morning to see if we needed to get Steven's blood drawn earlier, prior to coming to his office. She said no and that no extra blood work was on the schedule for Steven. She told me that Dr. Einhorn was going to examine Steven first and then the bloodwork would be done. I guess it will just be a waiting game after that and probably get results over the phone. All I can think of right now are the markers and the huge step it will be just getting Steven on those chemo pills. I wasn't even going to post until the blood tests came back but my stomach is just churning right now. I wish I didn't get so worked up about these marker checks but I really can't help it. I hate this cancer and I hate what it has put my son through. I'll let everyone know about the markers as soon as possible. Keep up the thoughts and prayers and I'll be praying for everyone else.

Hey Larry, looks like Nick beat me to it
Hang in there, I remember when we came back for Nicks surgery, it also felt like we had never left. Very strange! Hang in there, those markers will be normal, though i don't think anybody is ever comfortable getting them done, and I'm sure we will all still be nervous about it three years from now.

Nap Town What!! What!!

I think we all might be able to refer to Indy as our old Stompin' grounds after all of the time we spent there... All that said I have been thinking about Steven all week. I just want to reiterate that it isn't a bother to call me. I think he feels guilty calling me he always apologizes when he calls like he is bothering me. I like chatting with that Bruiser of a son of yours! I am expecting awesome news today. Do you guys head back tomorrow? Keep us posted.

Find the funny, Keep laughing.

John

OK...Tha blood was sent in over two hours ago and the only thing we know right now is that everything is good on the normal blood tests. The lab where they check the tumor markers is separate from where the other blood tests were done. Dr. Einhorn's nurse said that she will call them back by 7:00 pm to see if the blood was received. As of now, we wait, probably till tomorrow. There will not be much sleep tonight. Please keep up the thoughts and prayers.

The results are in and Steven's BHCG is 1.4. Dr. Einhorm accidentally called my wife back in Texas to give us the news. My wife called me and told me the news then I let her tell Steven. Two grown men sobbing...Well, were over that now and we are fixin' to head out for a celebration. Good sleeping tonight and a happy flight home tomorrrow. Thank you everyone for sending awesome thoughts and prayers our way. We're not there yet but we're headed in the right direction. I continue to pray for everyone on this forum.

Larry and Steven,
What fantatic news! I pray for Steven every single night and I'm sure there are many others doing the same thing. I'm sure you feel as if you can breathe now. I hate waiting on my Steve's markers, I feel like I'm holding my breath until I hear the results.
Have a safe trip home and you will all continue to be in my prayers.

Cheryl
