If you think he's dehydrating call the doc. Banans and rice may help "bind" thing up but if he still has the runs he may need someting stronger than Immodium.

Just to make sure, he doesn't have any fevers? Obviously all the meds are causing a stress to his GI system but, always in the back of my mind when somoene has diarrhea is infection (especially when they are immunocompromised).

Pedialyte is the best thing for replacement because it is more isoosmotic - will be absorbed into the bowel lumen resulting in hydration. Sodas and sugary drinks can actually worsen diarrhea because they are hyperosmotic (will pull fluid from the bowel wall and excrete it ... making the dehydration worse).

Hope he is through the worst!

Actually he did get a fever. It was around 100.8. I gave him tylenol and his is better now. He was getting fever in the hospital too, and they had tested his stool and it came back negative. I have been giving him gatorade is that okay? Also should I call the doctor?

Hi Sweetie....

I am sure that Gatorade is ok. Les drank lots while he was sick. I would just give him what ever he wants and can keep down. I would think that any fever isnt good and might need to let the doctor know. Sweet Friend.. when it is time.. Hospice would come to you to check him. It doesnt have to mean you have given up hope and he can still get treatment. It will just keep him from having to go to the doctor.

I am here for you as is everyone else. There are some wonderful people from this site who live in NJ. You can lean on Karen, Alex, Bill, and Nancy for a few. I wish I was closer and I would come and take care of YOU!

We are coming to NJ in October for Phil's dad's birthday. We also hope to make the trip this summer. Phil's dad lives in Lakewood. Is that close to you? Karen is in Warren.. Please lean on her.. she is a sweetie..

Love,
Pam

Sussa,

Pedialyte may be better than Gatorade, as Loveumms stated, keep away from sugary stuff. I think Gatorade can be up there in sugar, so G2 may be better. We're just giving general tips on diarrhea, If you are wondering for even a minute about calling the doctor...call the doctor.

Exhaustion

Andy wanted me to ask the forum family if it is normal to feel so drained out after just the second cycle of TIP.

He keeps getting a fever of 100.8. Diarreah is much better. I told his doctor and she said he needs to come in for blood work but Andy is just too tired to go.

Pam, Hospice would mean he can continue chemo? If he can still get chemo I think he would consider it. Do I talk to the doctor to find out more? Also how does the insurance work on that? Pls. let me know and anyone else who has had hospice, I would really like to hear from you.

Thank you.

sussa,

I'm glad the diarhhea is better. I'm betting if you PM Pam your phone number she will give you a call. Any way of r anurse to go to your home for the blood draw and maybe get him some IV fluids?

Ths hospital Andy is treated in should have a social worker that can help you with home care and insurance issues.

Strength, hope and prayers,
Karen

Hello Sussa

TIP kicked the poop out of my husband, it knocked him down more then the HD chemo did and it made the most impact on this cancer, his tumour markers took a nose dive with this protocol, bugs me to this day as I often wonder if they had not followed normal protocal and had given him another round or two of this instead of the HD chemo what would of happened. But he had many of the symptoms your husband is experiencing, it was the only time he got physically ill through his whole year of treatment. But at the end he had the best outcome from it. Tell your husband to hang in there.

Thinking of you guys
Dawn Ann

Visitng Nurse Service

Today we had a nurse from the visiting nurse association come in for Andy's blood work. Thank you Pam for the idea. I told the doctor that Andy is too drained out to come to the clinic for anything and mentioned to her about a nurse coming to our house. She agreed right away and we had a nurse come in to draw blood. We will have the results of that tomorrow. Overall Andy is feeling better, diarreah under control and no fever. Cough is still there though.

I will post the results of the blood work tomorrow.

Chemo working!!

Results are in BHCG is now 3185 down from 34516!!! AFP is normal and LDH is 690. Atleast we know the chemo is working.
Andy is stll fatigued and so he does not move around. In bed all the time. The plan is to start the next cycle on 4/5.

chemo cycle 3

Andy started chemo cycle 3 on monday, 4/5. He has been okay, no major side effects or complications. He has been breathing on his own. We even went away this weekend to Poconos, PA. It was fun. He finishes chemo tomorrow and will be hopefully discharged too.

Andy got home on Friday. He threw up a few times since then. Today, he has diarrhea, and also a stomach ache. He even threw up. He seems okay, but week. Every TIP cycle has its issues. Last cycle he had a lot of diarrhea, they even run some lab tests to see if he had an infection, everything came back clear, His oncologist said it was probably due to chemo.

His hospital stay went pretty smooth, no issues. He had a little nausea on day 4 and 5, but nothing major. Well, I guess it was too good to be true. He is feeling down, now that he is home.

Hi Susan

I've been a silent observer of your postings.

I'm so glad your husband is doing well; especially with the drop in the BHCG.
This is fantastic news. Woohoo.

Yesterday was not too good. He threw up after eating. He would throw up like after 2 hours after eating something. His stomach was hurting a lot. Today he has not vomitted so far. He looks okay at best.

Oh, poor Andy! A fellow patient I know from the hospital throws up 2 hours after each meal time. His caregiver said that you could time your clocks by his regular 'sessions'. But after each session, he would snack a little because that's when he feels good enough to eat.

I hope Andy feels better soon.

Thank you guys.

Andy is a bit better today. He did not throw up all of yesterday. I have been giving him Prilosec and I think that has helped him a lot.

No actually Andy wanted to delay his chemo another week to get his strength back. His oncologist was okay with that. So he starts chemo on Monday, 5/3.

We had an appointment today with the doctor, I was waiting to post an update tomorrow after the blood work results come back. The doctor said after this cycle, she may want to give him a 5th cycle, but that would be after he has an MRI of the brain done and he feels well enough to take another cycle. I thought that was strange. Her reasoning was that the first cycle was back in December and then we had a 9 week break in between. She said that cycle almost seems non existent. She trained at MSKCC under Dr. Bosl, so I guess I will have to trust her. Has anyone ever heard of a doctor a 5th cycle. Bear in mind that Andy got TIP the first cycle, then the last 3 cycles were only TP(no Ifosformide) due to the risk of seizures.

I will post the results of the blood work tomorrow.

Swell! What an amazing drop, from 3185 to 200 in one cycle. Fantastic news! I hope Cycle 4 brings an even bigger decrease! Congratulations!

With respect to the 5th cycle, as terrible as chemo is, I think its probably a good idea that Andy does Cycle 5. At the current rate of decrease, the bHCG is likely to be above normal at the end of Cycle 4. In the very first TIP cycle, when Andy's bHCG dropped to 40, the marker went back up quite quickly. Perhaps it would be better to have this 5th cycle to bring the marker down to normal.
